“The prophets prophesy falsely, and the priests rule by their own authority; and my people love to have it so. What will you do in the end of it?”
What does Jeremiah 5:31 mean?
Jeremiah was calling out a broken system where leaders had stopped serving God's truth and started serving themselves instead, and people had actually grown comfortable with it. The prophets were telling people what they wanted to hear rather than what they needed to hear, and the priests were using their positions for personal power rather than genuine spiritual care. What makes this verse so sobering is that last line, "my people love to have it so"—God isn't just upset at the leaders, but also at how people had become complicit, choosing comfortable lies over difficult truths. The question at the end, "What will you do in the end of it?" carries a note of urgency and warning.
