What does Jeremiah 5:29 mean?
God is asking this question to shake people awake to the reality of their own choices. The prophet Jeremiah has just described widespread injustice, corruption, and turning away from God throughout Judah, and God's rhetorical question cuts to the heart of accountability: if wrongdoing happens repeatedly, doesn't it naturally bring consequences? This isn't God looking for revenge in an angry, petty sense. Rather, it's the voice of someone who loves a people deeply and is grief-stricken by their refusal to change course despite many warnings. When we ignore God's direction and harm each other consistently, justice isn't optional—it's the inevitable result of broken relationship with the source of life itself. The question invites us to consider: what should happen when a community turns away from goodness? Some weight must be felt before people turn back around.
