Jeremiah 44:23

Because you have burned incense, and because you have sinned against Yahweh, and have not obeyed Yahweh’s voice, nor walked in his law, nor in his statutes, nor in his testimonies; therefore this evil has happened to you, as it is today.”

What does Jeremiah 44:23 mean?

Jeremiah is speaking to Judeans living in Egypt after Jerusalem's fall, and he's laying out a hard truth: their troubles didn't come out of nowhere. They had turned to false gods (burning incense to idols), ignored God's guidance, and refused to follow His ways, and now they're experiencing the real consequences of those choices. What makes this verse challenging is that Jeremiah isn't offering false comfort or a quick fix. He's calling people to see the connection between their decisions and their suffering, which can be painful to hear when you're already struggling. But there's something honest and even compassionate about it, because recognizing where we've gone off track is the only way to change direction and find our way back. Sometimes we need to sit with that reality before we can move toward healing.
