Jeremiah 44:2
““Yahweh of Armies, the God of Israel, says: ‘You have seen all the evil that I have brought on Jerusalem, and on all the cities of Judah. Behold, today they are a desolation, and no man dwells in them,”
What does Jeremiah 44:2 mean?
Jeremiah is reminding his people of something they've witnessed firsthand: the destruction of their homeland. Jerusalem and the cities of Judah have been reduced to ruins, emptied of their inhabitants because of God's judgment on their unfaithfulness. This isn't Jeremiah speaking his own opinion, but rather confronting people with the reality they can actually see around them. He's essentially saying, "Look at what's happened, you know this is real, so now listen to what God is calling you to understand about it." The weight here is meant to shake people awake during an incredibly painful period of exile and loss. Even in the midst of that devastation, God hadn't abandoned the conversation with his people, which is why Jeremiah keeps speaking these difficult words. Sometimes we need to honestly acknowledge hard consequences before we're ready to hear what comes next.
