Jeremiah 43:3
“but Baruch the son of Neriah has turned you against us, to deliver us into the hand of the Chaldeans, that they may put us to death, and carry us away captive to Babylon.””
What does Jeremiah 43:3 mean?
The survivors after Jerusalem's fall were desperate and scared, and they needed someone to blame for their suffering. They accused Baruch (the prophet Jeremiah's trusted scribe and companion) of secretly working against them, suggesting he'd manipulated Jeremiah into giving them unwelcome advice. What's revealing here is that their fear and pain made them lash out at the messenger rather than listen to the message, which was that God was calling them to surrender to Babylon for their own survival. This reflects something painfully human: when life goes wrong, we often attack the people closest to us or those trying to help, especially if their counsel challenges what we want to hear. The accusation against Baruch was completely unfounded, but that didn't matter to people in crisis mode who wanted a villain to fight against instead of facing hard truths.
