What does Jeremiah 42:15 mean?
After the Babylonian destruction of Jerusalem, a small group of Jewish survivors faced a crucial decision: whether to flee to Egypt or stay in their devastated homeland. This verse captures the moment when the prophet Jeremiah is about to warn them against that escape plan, speaking on behalf of God. Yahweh acknowledges their intention to run toward Egypt, which seemed like safety and stability to traumatized people with nowhere else to turn. What makes this significant is that God is about to tell them this choice, though understandable, will lead them further away from restoration and blessing. Sometimes our most instinctive survival moves, however logical they seem in the moment, might not be what leads us toward healing and hope.
