Jeremiah 42:16

then it will happen that the sword, which you fear, will overtake you there in the land of Egypt; and the famine, about which you are afraid, will follow close behind you there in Egypt; and you will die there.

What does Jeremiah 42:16 mean?

After Jerusalem's fall, a group of Judean survivors asked the prophet Jeremiah whether they should flee to Egypt for safety. God's answer through Jeremiah was stark: the very dangers they were running from—warfare and starvation—would find them there anyway. The point isn't that Egypt was uniquely dangerous, but that running from God's word in fear would lead nowhere good. Sometimes we exhaust ourselves trying to escape consequences or find security in places that can't actually protect us, when what we really need is to turn toward God instead of away from Him. This verse reminds us that anxiety-driven decisions, made without seeking God's guidance, often lead us toward the very harm we were trying to avoid.
