What does Jeremiah 42:14 mean?
After Jerusalem's fall, a group of Jewish refugees asked the prophet Jeremiah whether they should flee to Egypt for safety. When Jeremiah delivered God's warning against going, they rejected it and decided to go anyway, convinced that Egypt offered the security and provision they desperately needed. This verse captures their reasoning: they believed Egypt would shield them from violence, starvation, and the chaos of war. What's heartbreaking about this moment is that fear had convinced them that running from God's instruction was the same as running toward safety. They were certain they knew better than the prophet what would keep them alive. The underlying struggle feels very human, especially when you're facing real hardship: sometimes we're so afraid of what might happen that we convince ourselves to ignore the wisdom being offered to us. Whether that wisdom comes from Scripture, from trusted people around us, or from a quiet sense of God's direction, fear can make us stubborn about our own plans instead of open to a harder path that might actually be wiser.
