“Then Jeremiah said to Zedekiah, “If I declare it to you, will you not surely put me to death? If I give you counsel, you will not listen to me.””
What does Jeremiah 38:15 mean?
Jeremiah has already been imprisoned once for speaking God's truth, so his caution here makes complete sense. The prophet isn't refusing to help King Zedekiah, but rather naming the painful reality they both know: the king tends to punish messengers who bring him unwelcome news, and he rarely follows through on their guidance anyway. This moment shows what happens when leadership becomes defensive and closed off. Jeremiah is willing to speak, but he's learned through hard experience that truth-telling in that palace comes with real consequences. Many of us recognize this dynamic in our own relationships or workplaces, where we've learned to stay quiet because honesty hasn't been welcomed before.
