Jeremiah 38:14

Then Zedekiah the king sent and took Jeremiah the prophet to himself into the third entry that is in Yahweh’s house. Then the king said to Jeremiah, “I will ask you something. Hide nothing from me.”

What does Jeremiah 38:14 mean?

King Zedekiah had kept the prophet Jeremiah imprisoned because he was tired of hearing difficult truths, yet here he sneaks him away to ask for honest counsel anyway. There's a quiet desperation in this moment: the king wants the prophet's real answer, not flattery, which shows how badly things have fallen apart during Jerusalem's siege. What's striking is that Zedekiah already knows Jeremiah speaks truth, yet he's also afraid of what that truth might demand of him. Many of us recognize this tension, wanting genuine guidance while hoping it won't cost us anything, and this scene captures that human struggle without judgment.
