Jeremiah 23:13
ββI have seen folly in the prophets of Samaria. They prophesied by Baal, and caused my people Israel to err.β
What does Jeremiah 23:13 mean?
God is calling out false prophets who claimed to speak for him while actually serving other gods and leading people away from truth. Samaria was the capital of the northern kingdom of Israel, and these prophets were using their influence to turn people toward Baal worship instead of toward God. What makes this so serious is that people trusted these voices, believing they were hearing from God when they were actually being guided into spiritual confusion and away from what's real. The underlying concern here speaks across centuries: it matters who we listen to and what their actual allegiances are. When someone claims spiritual authority but their words lead us away from God's character (love, justice, honesty), we're being offered folly dressed up as wisdom. God grieves this not because he's offended, but because his people suffer when they're misled.
