Jeremiah 22:17
βBut your eyes and your heart are only for your covetousness, for shedding innocent blood, for oppression, and for doing violence.ββ
What does Jeremiah 22:17 mean?
God is calling out a leader whose priorities have become deeply twisted. Instead of using power to protect and serve, this person's whole focus has narrowed to grabbing more wealth, crushing vulnerable people, and maintaining control through force. The prophet is saying that when you look at what someone actually does with their time, money, and influence, you see their true heart. In this case, what's visible is greed and cruelty, not justice or compassion. For anyone reading this today, it's a sobering reminder that our choices reveal what we genuinely value, and that a heart bent only on gaining more and protecting itself at others' expense is a lonely and spiritually empty place to end up.
