“who tell wood, ‘You are my father;’ and a stone, ‘You have given birth to me:’ for they have turned their back to me, and not their face; but in the time of their trouble they will say, ‘Arise, and save us.’”
What does Jeremiah 2:27 mean?
Jeremiah is describing how the people of his time turned away from God to worship idols made of wood and stone, calling them "father" and "mother" as if these lifeless objects could care for them. It's a striking image of how foolish and backwards this rejection was. Yet here's the painful irony: when disaster strikes and they're in real trouble, they suddenly cry out to God for rescue, the very God they'd abandoned. The verse captures both the tragedy of abandoning what's real for what's false, and God's heartbreak at being rejected only to be sought again when people are desperate.
