James 2:6
“But you have dishonored the poor man. Don’t the rich oppress you, and personally drag you before the courts?”
What does James 2:6 mean?
James is calling out a painful contradiction in his community: they're showing favoritism to wealthy people while dismissing the poor, yet it's often the rich who are actually harming them. He's not saying wealth itself is sinful, but rather pointing out how illogical it is to curry favor with people who exploit you while ignoring those who may be suffering alongside you in faith. This hits especially hard if you're someone who's been treated poorly by people with money or power, or if you've caught yourself being nicer to someone because of their status. James is inviting his readers (and us) to notice where we're bowing to the wrong sources of power and to recognize dignity in people society overlooks.
