James 2:5
“Listen, my beloved brothers. Didn’t God choose those who are poor in this world to be rich in faith, and heirs of the Kingdom which he promised to those who love him?”
What does James 2:5 mean?
James is reminding his community that God's values often run opposite to the world's. The poor, whom society overlooks and dismisses, are often the ones who develop deep faith because they have fewer props to lean on and learn to trust God more readily. Being "rich in faith" and becoming heirs of God's kingdom are the real treasures, far outweighing money or status. This isn't romantic idealization of poverty, but rather an honest observation that hardship can become fertile ground for genuine spiritual growth when we turn toward God instead of away from him.
