Isaiah 66:4
“I also will choose their delusions, and will bring their fears on them; because when I called, no one answered; when I spoke, they didn’t listen; but they did that which was evil in my eyes, and chose that in which I didn’t delight.””
What does Isaiah 66:4 mean?
This verse captures a painful truth: when people persistently turn away from God and ignore his voice, he sometimes allows them to experience the natural consequences of their own choices. God isn't punishing arbitrarily here, but rather stepping back and letting people have what they've chosen, much like a parent who stops trying to guide a rebellious child. The "delusions" and "fears" Isaiah mentions aren't arbitrary either. They're the real results that come from building your life on false things and living in opposition to how God designed you to flourish. When we reject God's invitation to listen and follow him, we're left with whatever false comfort or empty pursuit we've substituted instead, and that eventually catches up with us. It's a sobering reminder that ignoring God's voice isn't really a free pass, it's a choice with genuine weight behind it.
