“He who kills an ox is as he who kills a man; he who sacrifices a lamb, as he who breaks a dog’s neck; he who offers an offering, as he who offers pig’s blood; he who burns frankincense, as he who blesses an idol. Yes, they have chosen their own ways, and their soul delights in their abominations:”
What does Isaiah 66:3 mean?
God is saying here that going through the motions of worship means nothing when your heart is turned away from him. Whether someone makes an elaborate sacrifice or performs a careful religious ritual, it's worthless if their inner life is built on disobedience and selfishness, Isaiah's listeners would have understood this as shocking because animal sacrifice was central to their faith, yet God is saying that even the most correct-looking sacrifice becomes as meaningless as killing a dog if the person doing it is fundamentally rejecting God's will. The real problem isn't the actions themselves, it's that people have deliberately chosen their own paths instead of God's, and they're perfectly content with that choice. This is a call to examine whether our worship and good deeds flow from a genuine desire to follow God, or whether we're just checking boxes while living however we please. God cares far more about honesty and repentance in our hearts than about perfect external performance.
