“who brings out the chariot and horse, the army and the mighty man (they lie down together, they shall not rise; they are extinct, they are quenched like a wick):”
What does Isaiah 43:17 mean?
God is reminding His people that no matter how formidable an enemy's military might appears, He stands above all earthly power. The image of chariots, horses, and armies lying down together—never to rise again—is Isaiah's way of saying that human strength, however impressive, is ultimately fragile and temporary when set against God's purposes. This comes during a time when Israel faced overwhelming threats from foreign powers, and people naturally felt afraid and helpless. The comparison to a wick being snuffed out captures something true about power that depends only on human effort: it flickers and goes out. The point isn't that God enjoys destruction, but that He wants His anxious people to remember where true strength lies and to trust Him rather than their circumstances.
