“I say that your counsel and strength for the war are only vain words. Now in whom do you trust, that you have rebelled against me?”
What does Isaiah 36:5 mean?
The Assyrian commander is mocking the people of Judah, suggesting that whatever military plans or reassurances their leaders have offered are just empty talk. He's pressing them on a deeper question: if they truly trusted in God, why would they have resisted Assyrian rule? The taunt assumes that their rebellion was foolish because their strength cannot match Assyria's might.
