Isaiah 36:6
“Behold, you trust in the staff of this bruised reed, even in Egypt, which if a man leans on it, it will go into his hand and pierce it. So is Pharaoh king of Egypt to all who trust in him.”
What does Isaiah 36:6 mean?
King Hezekiah's advisors were pinning their hopes on Egypt's military support against the powerful Assyrian army, but the prophet Isaiah uses a vivid image to warn them: Egypt is like a broken reed that crumbles under pressure. Just as someone leaning on a splintered reed would only get hurt, trusting in Egypt's promises would leave them wounded and betrayed. The point isn't really about actual reeds, but about the danger of relying on allies who are weak or unreliable when facing real threats. Isaiah is calling them to trust God instead, rather than looking to human power that will ultimately fail them when they need it most.
