Hosea 7:9
“Strangers have devoured his strength, and he doesn’t realize it. Indeed, gray hairs are here and there on him, and he doesn’t realize it.”
What does Hosea 7:9 mean?
Hosea is describing a nation (Israel) that's slowly falling apart without even noticing. The image is of someone being gradually weakened by outside forces, their vitality seeping away piece by piece, yet they remain unaware. It's like watching someone's health decline while they keep living as if nothing is wrong. The prophet uses this vivid picture to show how spiritual decline often works. We can lose our way incrementally, through small compromises and neglect, until we've strayed so far that we barely recognize ourselves. The gray hairs represent the passage of time and accumulated wear, but the person remains oblivious to how much they've changed. Hosea's point is urgent and tender at once: wake up and see what's happening before it's too late.
