Hosea 7:8

What does Hosea 7:8 mean?
Hosea is describing Israel (using the northern kingdom's name, Ephraim) as a nation that has lost its identity by constantly trying to blend in with surrounding peoples and their ways. The pancake image is wonderfully blunt: a pancake that never gets flipped only cooks on one side, becoming burnt on the bottom while remaining raw on top, useful to no one. The prophet is saying that Israel's attempt to be half-faithful to God while half-committed to foreign alliances and practices leaves them broken and ineffective. They're neither fully devoted to their own calling nor genuinely integrated into their neighbors' world, so they're falling apart from the inside. It's a reminder that divided loyalty often leaves us damaged in ways we don't anticipate.
