What does Hebrews 6:17 mean?
God wanted to give the heirs of his promise something absolutely rock-solid to hold onto, so he didn't just make a promise—he backed it up with an oath. In the ancient world, an oath was the strongest possible commitment you could make, something that bound you completely. Since God is already infinitely trustworthy, he didn't need to swear by anything greater than himself, so that's exactly what he did. The point is that God went the extra mile to reassure us that his plans and his faithfulness won't change, precisely because he knows we need that kind of certainty when life feels uncertain or when we're struggling to believe.
