What does Hebrews 6:16 mean?
When someone swears an oath in ancient times, they call on someone greater than themselves to witness their promise, making it binding and impossible to go back on. The writer is explaining how oaths work in human relationships: we appeal to a higher authority to guarantee our word is trustworthy, and once that oath is made, the matter is settled. This sets up the next verse, where the author explains that God does something similar but infinitely more powerful, since God can only swear by himself because there is no one greater.
