What does Habakkuk 2:9 mean?
The prophet Habakkuk is describing someone who builds their security through dishonest means, thinking that wealth obtained wrongfully will protect them and elevate them beyond harm's reach. There's a hard irony here: the person believes their ill-gotten gains will shield them, but the prophet warns that this approach leads to their downfall instead. This speaks to something many of us recognize in ourselves or around us, how easy it is to justify shortcuts and compromises when we're afraid or desperate for safety.
