“Joseph said to them, “Don’t be afraid, for am I in the place of God?”
What does Genesis 50:19 mean?
Joseph's brothers had betrayed him years earlier, selling him into slavery. Now, after their father's death, they feared Joseph would finally take revenge. But Joseph's response shows something beautiful: he recognized that holding onto anger and punishment wasn't his role. He was asking them, essentially, "Do I have the right to play God and judge you?" The answer was no, and his question invites us to consider the same thing about our own grudges. When we hold onto hurt and refuse to forgive, we're often trying to be the judge and punisher, a role that belongs only to God. Joseph's grace toward his brothers reminds us that letting go of the need for revenge is both more human and more divine.
