Genesis 50:20
“As for you, you meant evil against me, but God meant it for good, to bring to pass, as it is today, to save many people alive.”
What does Genesis 50:20 mean?
Joseph speaks these words to his brothers after their father Jacob dies. Years earlier, they had sold him into slavery out of jealousy, intending to destroy him, but through a series of events Joseph ended up in Egypt where he eventually rose to power. When famine struck the land, Joseph was positioned to save his entire family and many others from starvation. What Joseph recognizes here is that God was working through the painful circumstances, redeeming them into something life-giving. He's not excusing what his brothers did or saying their cruelty didn't matter, but rather acknowledging that God's purposes were larger than their intentions. This speaks to something many people experience in their own lives: looking back at difficult seasons and seeing how God was present, even when circumstances felt broken or unfair at the time.
