Genesis 46:2
“God spoke to Israel in the visions of the night, and said, “Jacob, Jacob!” He said, “Here I am.””
What does Genesis 46:2 mean?
Jacob is on his way down to Egypt during a severe famine, and he's anxious about leaving the land God promised to his descendants. In this night vision, God calls to him by name, twice, the way you'd speak to someone you know intimately. Jacob's immediate response, "Here I am," shows he's listening and ready, which opens the door for God to reassure him that this journey is part of God's plan, not a betrayal of his faith. The repetition of Jacob's name (the way God does throughout Scripture when something important is about to happen) reminds us that God knows us personally and speaks to us in the midst of our real fears and uncertainties.
