Genesis 46:1
“Israel traveled with all that he had, and came to Beersheba, and offered sacrifices to the God of his father, Isaac.”
What does Genesis 46:1 mean?
Jacob (whose name was changed to Israel) is leaving his homeland with his entire family and possessions, heading down to Egypt during a severe famine. Before making this enormous journey into the unknown, he stops at Beersheba, a place sacred to his family, and makes an offering to God, the same God his father Isaac had worshipped. This pause to sacrifice shows Jacob seeking blessing and reassurance before stepping into an uncertain future, almost like he's asking for God's guidance and protection for what lies ahead. It's a deeply human moment: when we face major changes or scary unknowns, we often instinctively reach toward what feels sacred or solid, and Jacob does exactly that.
