Genesis 37:17
“The man said, “They have left here, for I heard them say, ‘Let us go to Dothan.’” Joseph went after his brothers, and found them in Dothan.”
What does Genesis 37:17 mean?
When Joseph goes looking for his brothers out in the fields, a stranger points him toward the town of Dothan, a journey of several more miles. Joseph doesn't hesitate, but follows immediately. What makes this moment haunting is that Joseph has no idea what waits for him there, while his brothers have already decided among themselves to harm him. He's walking toward the very place where they'll throw him into a pit and sell him into slavery. His innocence and trust in going after them stands in sharp contrast to their bitter resentment. Sometimes the hardest part of faith isn't about grand gestures, but about showing up for others in the small ways we can, even when we're vulnerable, even when we don't know what's coming.
