What does Genesis 37:18 mean?

Joseph's brothers spot him coming toward them across the fields, and something dark happens in that moment of distance between them. Before he even arrives, before a single word is spoken, they've already decided he will die. The verse captures how quickly jealousy and resentment can harden into something murderous, how a person can be condemned by their brothers not for anything they've done in that moment, but for who they are and what they represent. It's a stark reminder of how hatred can take root and grow in our hearts before we even give the other person a chance to exist in our presence, let alone speak.
