What does Genesis 32:6 mean?
Jacob had sent messengers ahead to his estranged brother Esau after years of separation, hoping to smooth things over. This report came back with alarming news: Esau was coming toward him with 400 armed men. Given their history (Jacob had tricked Esau out of his blessing years before), this sounded like the approach of an army rather than a welcoming family reunion. Jacob's fear in this moment was completely understandable, and the verse captures that gut-punch of dread when we realize a confrontation we've dreaded is actually happening. Sometimes our worst imaginings feel confirmed, and we have to find our footing again.
