What does Genesis 32:7 mean?
Jacob is about to face his brother Esau after twenty years apart, and he's terrified. Their last encounter ended badly, with Jacob stealing Esau's blessing and inheritance, so Jacob has every reason to fear what might happen now. In his anxiety, he does what makes practical sense to him: he splits his family and animals into two groups so that if Esau attacks one camp, the other might escape. This moment captures something true about how we respond to fear. Jacob takes a concrete action because standing still feels unbearable, even though his real need isn't a contingency plan but reconciliation and trust. It's a vulnerable picture of someone caught between panic and the possibility that things might actually be okay.
