What does Genesis 32:18 mean?
Jacob is sending a massive gift ahead to his estranged brother Esau, whom he cheated out of his birthright years earlier. In this instruction to his servants, Jacob is carefully framing the gift as a sign of respect and submission, calling himself Esau's servant and the animals a "present sent to my lord." He's also telling them to mention that he himself is following behind, which signals he's coming to meet Esau face-to-face rather than hiding. This reflects Jacob's nervousness about the reunion, but also his genuine attempt to make peace by showing humility and vulnerability.
