Genesis 32:17
“He commanded the foremost, saying, “When Esau, my brother, meets you, and asks you, saying, ‘Whose are you? Where are you going? Whose are these before you?’”
What does Genesis 32:17 mean?
Jacob is preparing his massive gift of livestock to meet his estranged brother Esau, whom he cheated years ago and fled from in fear. He instructs his servants to go ahead in waves with these animals, each group ready to explain that everything belongs to Jacob and is meant as a present for Esau. Jacob is essentially trying to soften his brother's heart before they come face to face, sending gifts as messengers of peace ahead of his own arrival. It's a picture of someone who's genuinely anxious about reconciliation and willing to be generous and humble to make things right, even though he doesn't yet know if forgiveness will be offered.
