What does Genesis 32:16 mean?
Jacob is preparing to meet his brother Esau after years of separation and tension, and he's doing it strategically. He's dividing his livestock into separate groups and sending them ahead with his servants, one herd at a time with gaps between them. This way, if Esau rejects the first gift, there are more coming, showing earnest desire to make peace rather than appearing stingy or presumptuous. There's something touching about this: Jacob is trying everything he can think of to smooth the way toward reconciliation. He's nervous, he's humble, and he's willing to be generous and patient. It reminds us that sometimes when we're trying to repair a broken relationship, we need to be thoughtful, persistent, and willing to let our actions speak gradually rather than all at once.
