What does Genesis 32:19 mean?
Jacob is preparing to meet his brother Esau after years of separation and estrangement, so he's splitting his gifts into separate herds and sending servants ahead with instructions. Each servant is told to give the same message: that these animals are a gift from Jacob, sent out of respect. By spacing out the herds, Jacob hopes to soften Esau's heart gradually, letting each gift demonstrate his goodwill before they finally meet face-to-face.
