Genesis 3:8
“They heard Yahweh God’s voice walking in the garden in the cool of the day, and the man and his wife hid themselves from the presence of Yahweh God among the trees of the garden.”
What does Genesis 3:8 mean?
After Adam and Eve ate the forbidden fruit, they suddenly became aware of their own nakedness and shame. When they heard God walking through the garden during the cooler evening hours, their instinct was to hide among the trees rather than face him. This moment captures something deeply human: the impulse to run from God when we've done something wrong. Adam and Eve didn't know yet that reconciliation was possible, so fear and guilt drove them to concealment. Yet God still came looking for them, still spoke to them, still pursued a relationship with them even in their failure. That pattern of God seeking us out, even when we're hiding, echoes throughout Scripture and speaks to the heart of the Christian story.
