What does Genesis 3:7 mean?
After eating the forbidden fruit, Adam and Eve suddenly became aware of their own vulnerability and shame in a way they hadn't before. Their "eyes being opened" doesn't mean they gained knowledge they were lacking, but rather that they experienced a painful shift in how they saw themselves and each other, moving from innocent acceptance to self-consciousness and fear. Their immediate response, sewing fig leaves to cover themselves, shows how shame makes us want to hide. It's a deeply human reaction: when we feel exposed or wrong, our instinct is to cover up rather than face what's happened. This moment captures something true about all of us, how broken relationships (with God, with ourselves, with others) leave us feeling unsafe and desperate to protect ourselves.
