Genesis 28:16
“Jacob awakened out of his sleep, and he said, “Surely Yahweh is in this place, and I didn’t know it.””
What does Genesis 28:16 mean?
Jacob had just experienced a profound vision of a stairway stretching between heaven and earth, with God's promise of blessing and protection flowing down to him. When he woke, the reality of that encounter hit him deeply: the sacred was more present and accessible than he'd ever imagined. His words capture something many people recognize in their own spiritual journeys, that sudden awareness that God has been closer all along than we realized, even in moments when we felt alone or lost. There's real comfort in Jacob's surprise here, especially if you're going through a season where faith feels distant. It suggests that God's presence isn't dependent on our awareness of it, our worthiness, or even our actively seeking. Sometimes we simply wake up to what was already there.
