What does Genesis 27:23 mean?
Isaac was old and blind when his younger son Jacob came to him disguised as Esau, his older son. By feeling Jacob's arms covered in animal skins, Isaac believed he was touching Esau's naturally hairy skin, and this physical deception was enough to convince him. In that moment, Isaac gave Jacob the blessing meant for Esau, a transfer of family leadership and God's covenant promise that couldn't be taken back once spoken. This is one of Scripture's most uncomfortable stories about how deception entered God's family line. Isaac had his own role to play in the confusion (he favored Esau and seemed reluctant to bless the son God had chosen), but Jacob's willingness to lie and manipulate his aging father carries real consequences that unfold throughout his life. What's striking is that God's purposes weren't actually hindered by the trickery, yet the pain it created was very real.
