Genesis 13:7
“There was strife between the herdsmen of Abram’s livestock and the herdsmen of Lot’s livestock. The Canaanites and the Perizzites lived in the land at that time.”
What does Genesis 13:7 mean?
Abram and his nephew Lot had grown so wealthy that their flocks and herds were too large to share the same grazing land without conflict. Rather than let tension destroy their relationship, Abram made the generous choice to let Lot pick first and go wherever he wanted, while Abram would take what remained. The mention of the Canaanites and Perizzites living nearby reminds us that these two men of faith were foreigners in a land already occupied by others, which made it even more important that they resolve their disputes peacefully and present a united front. Sometimes the most faithful response to conflict isn't to fight harder for what we think we deserve, but to prioritize the people we love and trust God with what's left.
