Genesis 12:19
“Why did you say, ‘She is my sister,’ so that I took her to be my wife? Now therefore, see your wife, take her, and go your way.””
What does Genesis 12:19 mean?
Pharaoh is speaking to Abram after discovering that Sarai is actually Abram's wife, not his sister as he'd been told. Abram had lied out of fear for his life, assuming the powerful ruler would kill him to take a beautiful woman. Instead of punishing Abram, Pharaoh is incredulous and indignant, essentially saying, "Why would you deceive me like this? Take your wife and leave my household." It's a moment where Abram's lack of trust in God's protection led him to compromise his integrity, yet God protected both him and Sarai anyway. The passage shows how our fears can push us toward dishonesty, even when God has already promised to care for us. Pharaoh's command to leave, though stern, actually preserves Abram's life and reunites him with his wife.
