What does Genesis 12:20 mean?
This is the moment when Abraham (then called Abram) and his wife Sarah are sent out of Egypt after a difficult situation where Abraham had presented Sarah as his sister out of fear. Pharaoh, who had taken Sarah into his household not knowing she was Abraham's wife, discovered the deception and chose to let them both go rather than keep them or punish them further. The verse shows Pharaoh's decision to remove Abraham and all his possessions from Egypt completely, making a clean break from the situation. What's striking here is that despite the mess Abraham created through his own lack of faith, he left Egypt not harmed but actually enriched. The text earlier mentions he gained livestock and servants during his time there. This reminds us that God's protection can extend even when we've made poor choices, and sometimes what feels like an uncomfortable exit is actually God preserving us from consequences we might have faced otherwise.
