Galatians 2:17
“But if, while we sought to be justified in Christ, we ourselves also were found sinners, is Christ a servant of sin? Certainly not!”
What does Galatians 2:17 mean?
Paul is wrestling with a real tension that bothered people in his time: if following Christ means we're freed from the old rules, doesn't that make room for sin? His answer is a firm no. He's saying that being justified (made right) through faith in Christ doesn't mean Christ endorses or enables wrongdoing, any more than a doctor who heals a sick person is promoting illness. The underlying point is comforting for anyone who's struggled with guilt or felt caught between their old life and their new faith. Paul acknowledges the struggle is real—we do still mess up—but he's clear that Christ's grace isn't permission to do whatever we want. It's freedom to become *better*, not license to become worse. If you find yourself torn between old patterns and new conviction, that tension itself is actually a sign the Spirit is at work in you.
