“yet knowing that a man is not justified by the works of the law but through faith in Jesus Christ, even we believed in Christ Jesus, that we might be justified by faith in Christ, and not by the works of the law, because no flesh will be justified by the works of the law.”
What does Galatians 2:16 mean?
Paul is addressing a deep struggle in the early church: the question of how we become right with God. Some Jewish believers thought followers of Jesus still needed to obey all the Old Testament laws to be truly accepted by God. Paul says no, that's not how it works. Being made right with God comes through trusting Jesus, not through perfectly following rules, because nobody can actually keep all those laws perfectly anyway. This matters for everyone, then and now, because it means you don't earn your way into God's favor through moral effort or religious performance. Instead, it's about accepting what Jesus has already done. That's actually good news for people who feel like they're constantly falling short or trying hard enough.
