What does Ezekiel 4:12 mean?

God tells Ezekiel to bake bread using human waste as fuel, then eat it publicly in Jerusalem. This bizarre command was meant to shock the people into recognizing how dire their coming exile would be, when they'd be forced to eat unclean food and live in unsanitary conditions far from home. The harshness of the image makes it stick in your mind, which is exactly what a prophet needs when delivering warnings people don't want to hear. Ezekiel isn't being cruelβ€”he's being unforgettable, using his own obedience to this degrading act to show how serious God is about calling the nation back.
