“You shall drink water by measure, the sixth part of a hin. From time to time you shall drink.”
What does Ezekiel 4:11 mean?
Ezekiel was living through one of the most traumatic events in Israel's history, the siege and fall of Jerusalem. God asked him to act out the coming suffering through his own body, including severe rationing of food and water. This verse describes the water portion God commanded him to consume daily, about a quart (a hin was roughly six quarts), which would be genuine deprivation but not instant death. The point wasn't to torture Ezekiel but to help his people viscerally understand what they'd soon experience during the siege. When you're slowly hungry or thirsty, your mind stays fixed on that need in a way comfort never allows. By living this way, Ezekiel could speak with authentic gravity to a people who needed to wake up to the reality of what was coming. Sometimes the most urgent message requires us to embody it first.
