Exodus 6:3
“and I appeared to Abraham, to Isaac, and to Jacob, as God Almighty; but by my name Yahweh I was not known to them.”
What does Exodus 6:3 mean?
God is telling Moses something important about how He revealed Himself across generations. To Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob, God showed up as a powerful protector and provider (that's what "God Almighty" conveys), but they didn't know Him by the personal name Yahweh, the name that speaks to His intimate presence and covenant faithfulness. This doesn't mean God was distant before Moses, but rather that a new phase of relationship was beginning, where God's people would come to know Him in a deeper, more personal way through His revealed name. For those of us reading now, it's a reminder that faith often develops in layers, and that knowing God's name, His character, and His promises to us personally is part of how our own relationship with Him deepens over time.
