What does Exodus 6:2 mean?
God is introducing himself to Moses by his personal name, Yahweh (often translated as "the Lord"). This moment comes after Moses has just complained that his mission seems to be making things worse for the Israelites rather than better, and he's questioning whether God is really going to help. God's response, "I am Yahweh," is both a comfort and a gentle correction, reminding Moses of who he's dealing with. By using his covenant name, God is saying: I am the God who made promises to your ancestors Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob, and I keep my word. In the midst of doubt and discouragement, God is offering his name as a kind of anchor, a way of saying that his identity and character are trustworthy even when circumstances look impossible.
